Hello, Yumiko is writing. We organized the Guided Tour during OPEN STUDIOS in this year. The participants of Guided Tour for Kids were kids of course, but this tour was for adult. The time we planned was 4-5pm when the small number of visitors we had. We welcomed two pairs of family as the participants today. We started from Eduardo's studio. First of all, we let the participants see around the studio as the way they wanted. I guess it was difficult for three-year-old child because the content was for adults. Please let me introduce his artwork by quoting our guest curator's comment as following. Cachucho born in South Africa, currently based in Belgium. His video and performance pieces have dealt with the effects of foreign culture and encounters with others on human psychology, language and unconscious body movements. Cachucho was interested in the relationship between Japan and Brazil even before arriving Japan. But a meeting with a teacher from a Brazilian school in the Japanese city of Joso in Ibaraki inspired him to explore the relationship between different cultures. He approached this by working with 15-16 year-old students from the Brazilian school, and Japanese students from a high school in Toride. Before the students from the two schools meet on the 22nd November for a performance, Cachucho conducted workshops with them in separate groups. For his workshops, Cachucho adapted his lecture performance, I'm holding, walking, falling, produced for his graduation piece at the Dutch Art Institute in 2015, to accommodate multiple students. The shared language created through communal improvisation with people of different cultural backgrounds and the observations of other people's everyday gestures are reflected on banners made with the students, using “Nishi-no-uchi Washi paper” from Hitachi Omiya city, and which will also be used in the performance on the last day of the open studio. Essentially Cachucho's activity at ARCUS Project shows an array of challenges in improvised communication invented through interrelations, and how these are mastered by our bodies and then transformed into everyday matter. - Shihoko Iida [ Guest Curator 2015 ] Curator / Associate Professor, Department of InterMedia Art, Faculty of Fine Art, Tokyo University of the Arts Through my explanation about his work, I expected the participants to have new perspective. They relaxed and focused on seeing around the studio again. Next was Stephanie's studio. Just like we did in Eduardo's place, we took some time for the participants to feel her artwork. We read the text at the same time when we watched videos. Bickford-Smith made an interesting proposal: to research how to “become Japanese”. She began by observing her own and other people's inner self and appearance, through drawing and photography. She then held meditative workshops with female residents born in, or living in Moriya. These were of her own age - women who she considered as Japanese counterparts to herself. The participants were invited to her studio, set up to imitate a private room. There she encouraged them to focus on their bodies and movements through simple exercises. After an initial phase where the participants imitated each other's movement, she gave them questions about how they could be connected to feelings of a female foreigner who is in an unfamiliar place. Through this process, the participants projected their consciousness about themselves to the outside, and shared the process of “becoming the other”. Bickford-Smith tried through her workshop to shake up the psychological effects that shape people's identity. By temporarily concealing herself as a British and focusing on the feeling of being Japanese, she is trying to visualize the process of assimilating the feeling of the other while in Moriya. The sensation is similar to how we imagine the traces of someone's skin, and the sense that memory might remain in old clothes as we put them on. The last artist we visited was Angga. When we visited him, the studio almost showed a lighting for the night part. Anggawan Kusno used his studio to create the “Lost and Found and Lost and What Department”. The project is a temporary fictional institution only open in the daytime during the open studios period. The institution presents a number of personal histories accumulating through the residency, making a collection based on anonymous responses to a secret questionnaire that Kusno ask for Moriya residents, face-to-face interviews on war experiences, and research on post-war Japan and local history. Kusno approached people with big and complex questions right from the beginning of the residency. His questions, posed in a frank manner, addressed the transformation of Japanese society and political situation from the post-war era onwards, and the awareness of these issues for people with experience of radical transition periods living today. Behind Kusno's questions, lay an interest in comparing the emptiness of the post-colonial era and post-war modern history of his birth country Indonesia, with Japan, relativized it in a global context. The title of the whole project in this studio, I FORGOT WHAT I REMEMBER stems from Kusno's observations that we tend to easily forget the past. Yet LFLW does not criticize or present these issues as investigative journalism, but sets out to create a space to share unspoken memories, narrating them as fiction full of sensitivity and playfulness. The work demonstrates Kusno's artistic talent for creating fiction based on the gaps found in history. In Angga's studio, they participated in his workshop reaching back into their memories. So, as I expected.. it passed 5pm when the tour was over.. I would be glad if the participants could feel the uniqueness, serious attitude, toughness, diversity of artists' projects which are almost never ending. The mission of this tour was "sharing the unique experience that artists' activities changed or twisted the perspective to see the world". How did you feel? Photo: Hajime Kato
