hello. Mizuho is writing with rough English. Day by day, Artist's activities have gradually gotten busier.( Sorry, just excuse!) we will memorize about a short trip to Daigo town, an half and month ago. We went to the north area of Ibaraki, which is called "KENPOKU", but not "KENHOKU". kenPOku sounds familiar among Ibaraki citizen, though, other people seem to hear it strange. remind you again, the area is called not kenHOku, but kenPOku.(So funny) 『藝大子(げいだいご)』という、東京芸大・シルパコーン大学(タイ)・インドネシア国立藝術大学(ISI)による大子町でのアートプロジェクト開催を翌日に迎えて、スタッフ藤本さんにとっても実は初めての「県北」へ。 Today I will write about the travel to Kenpoku. It was the day before when the art project called "Geidaigo" was held in Daigo town. "Geidaigo" was planned and run by Tokyo University of the Arts (Japan), Silpakorn University (Tailand) and INSTITUT SENI INDONESIA DENPASAR (Indonesia). For Fujimoto-san, one of our staff, this was the first time for her to visit Kenpoku. We passed Yawara I.C. first, and headed to north part of Ibaraki Prefecture, and then reached Naka I.C. so called "Kenpoku door", and finally we went through national highway 118. When we left Moriya city, the sky was clear and blue, and so many helicopter flew across the sky. They were still searching the missing persons in Joso city because of the serious water flood. On the day before we left, through the whole night, the residence artists received lots of e-mails in Japanese warned inhabitants around this area to evacuate. They should have been scared by the natural disaster occurred in Joso where was quite close to Moriya. Few days later, our institution, "Moriya Manbi-no-sato" became temporary evacuation shelter, and we hosted some flood victims, which might our artists confused. Although Daigo is also located in the same state with Moriya, they have serious problem as population decline, aging population and low birth rate. Daigo has the largest land in Ibaraki Prefecture, and it is sightseeing spot with nature and hot spring. "Geidaigo" was organized to build good relationship between arts colleges from three different countries as the preparation for KENPOKU ART 2016. It took around two hours from Moriya to Daigo. In the "Daigo cafe" near the station, we accidentally met the artists from Indonesia. They were the teachers who played Wayang Kulit from Intitut Seni Indonesia. It seemed Anggawan enjoyed the conversation with them in Indonesian language. Daigo shopping district was still. The artists had interested in the entrance of the shrine. We found the exhibition about the workshop held in the center of the town by the students of Silpakorn University. You must visit Uwaoka primary school if you have chance to come to Daigo. This scenery made us nostalgic. Because here was often used as the location to shoot the film, they had many visitors. The artist called this school as "another Moriya Manabi-no-sato", and they began the music session with old musical instruments in music classroom. We used old school office as lounge. Anggawan pretended to be headmaster? The local guide provided us tea and Japanese pickled vegetables, which impressed us. "Geidaigo" was held in Hatsubara primary school that was located much far from the Daigo station. We could see dynamic nature on the way to go there. We experienced to cast as handicraft students, The motif is Anggawan himself! We also observed the hammering studio, and visited the photo exhibition of Mr. Risaku Suzuki. エドゥアルド....(笑) Here is pretty famous in Daigo. Eduardo…lol After we went through the tunnel, This is the Fukuroda waterfall! (Because it rained heavily on the previous day, too much water..) Anyway, we tried to take photos of the explosive power of the nature. Not only seeing the waterfall, we climbed to the top of the Mt. Tsukiori! (Fujimoto and I gave up at some point though.) Yes, the artists are young… We dropped by "Japanese paper museum" in Hitachi-ota city. One of the Japanese traditional craft, Nishi-no-uchi paper is pretty famous in Ibaraki prefecture. The artists had interested in Japanese paper, and they were surprised to touch it. The kimono made of Japanese paper was also exhibited. It was good opportunity to get to know how high quality the Nishi-no-uchi paper was. Anggawan looked for the Japanese paper for his sophisticated drawing. Eduardo asked the shop staff how to make paper string. Because his interest was also in making cloth, he looked excited by the string made from natural material. The artists' emotions gave the production in this area special value that the local people had not realized that it deserved. It was impressive for us to see them say "we found the treasure!". The artists researched the materials to seek the key to create their art works. They are smoothly preparing for the coming "open studio". KENPOKU ART 2016 will be held in next Fall in Kenpoku region, and before the art festival, we will have this event "art talk; what art can do in remote place" in ARCUS Studio on 15th of October. The past residence artist Song Ming Ang from Singapore is going to discuss with curator Mrs. Yukiko Shikata. We will start from 7.30pm, which might be late for some of you, however, it must be great opportunity to hear her story about her past works and KENPOKU ART 2016. Please feel free to join us.
