KENPOKU ART 2016 is the art festival that will be held in the north part of Ibaraki Prefecture in next Autumn, and we are very happy to announce you that one of our past residence artist will participate in the festival. The artist's name is Song Ming Ang, and he stayed in ARCUS Studio in 2010. He visited ARCUS stadio today for the event "art talk" in the Pre-art program related to KENPOKU ART2016. the event was going on through the curator of KENPOKU ART2016, Yukiko Shikata asked questions to Song Ming Ang and he answered. He started talking about the time before he decided to be an artist. It was great opportunity for us to get to know about him and his art works more deeply. Date back to around 2007, he was an student and he could not make the decision to be an artist until he was invited to ARCUS studio as residence artist. He took the video that his classmate of the college in London practiced singing a song of "The Robbots" by Kraftwerk in a cappella style. He likes music by the way. After his stay in ARCUS Project residency program, he joined Singapore Biennale in 2011. He exhibited his art work "Be True to Your School" in different way that the "open studio" event in ARCUS Studio. This work was globally appreciate and it became one of the collection in Singapore art museum. It is impressive for us that our old school song of Oisawa primary school is accepted as art work and shown in art festival or exhibition. Let me introduce about his work process during his residency in 2010 briefly. ARCUS Studio is housed in"Moriya Manabi-no-sato," the non-formal educational center managed by Moriya city. This institution was used to be Oisawa primary school originally but it was closed down in 1994. Song Ming accidentally found the lyric of school song of Oisawa primary school while he stayed here. His research was begun from his question, "Does ex-student of Oisawa still remember the lyric of their school song?", and he started looking for the alumnae and alumni. He could find some of them who worked in Moriya city hall and asked each of them to remember the school song and sing it. His took the video while he played accompaniment them the glockenspiel to sing the school song together. The reason why we call "old Oisawa primary school" is to distinguish the difference with the "new Oisawa primary school" located in another parts of Moriya city. The "old" Oisawa primary school was closed down because the number of students in this area increased rapidly, hence we needed bigger school for them studying. Recently, it is trendy to use abolished facility to revitalize the remoted place, however, Oisawa primary school was closed down to expect to be developed more than twenty years ago. The new school was built and new school song was sung, at the same time, this old school and school song were left and forgotten. Therefore, the old school song had been the unsung song for 23 years. By the way, he painted the glockenspiel with the seven colors that he found in the colorful house in Moriya. We can connect the brilliant house to the sound of the glockenspiel though the rainbow color. Please refer to his Homepage and his work. Also his glockenspiel that he made in Moriya was donated to Minaade(Minami Moriya Children's House). Song Ming participates in İstanbul Bienali held in Turkey. His work is something concerning to "music" again. It is the sculpture made from glass, which represents old music stand. He expresses the sound in town, the music that is made consciously, the sound people make unconsciously, or the beauty in sound-like landscape in his unique way from his perspective. We are looking forward to seeing his new work in KENPOKU ART2016.
